El Aventurero and RideMexico operate in a cooperative effort, to provide a safe, pleasant, and memorable experience traveling to and horseback riding in the Sierra Tarahumaras of Mexico. Norberto Padilla Rodriguiz and Susan Shields, respective providers of these two enterprises, wish to continuously improve, accommodate, and adjust their tours to best meet the needs and desires of their guests. To that end, we welcome constructive comments and suggestions. |
While in Arizona, those guests wishing to add a few days to their Mexico adventure may want to log onto Southeastern Arizona links that will introduce them to the Sonoita/Patagonia area. While in Mexico, guests may also prefer to choose additional travel options such as the Chihuahua-Pacifico train ride from Creel to Los Mochis; or extend their visit for other travel in Chihuahua. We are happy to help you make these choices.
Your providers, Norberto and Susan, are committed to safety on horseback and on general trails (for those who choose to hike or bike, rather than ride). Though both have been CPR and Red Cross-trained, we expect candid and honest completion of the Health Form we require prior to each ride. We also provide a Rider Experience Form as well as a chart for rating our rides in order to help you choose the tour best suited to your interests, skills, and health. While each of our forms is liberally spiced with humor, we are serious about safety. Two CB radios are carried on all pack trips in case of a need for emergency transport. A third radio is maintained at the Visitor Information Office in Creel. |

Norberto's horses are chosen and trained well for their job. They are Spanish Barb crosses (generally with Mustang and/or Quarter Horse); they are sure-footed, gentle and relatively small in contrast to most other breeds. The absolute non-rider can feel safe and comfortable on one of Norberto's horses. Riding instruction, however, is provided by Susan for the first-time rider. Remember this: getting off your horse and walking for a while is always an option. Even our vaquero dismounts from time to time to get the stiff out of his joints or simply for a change of pace!
Each tour provides a different experience. Some are more suitable to occur during a traditional holiday or celebration in Creel or Mexico in general - such as Semana Santa, Celebration of Guadelupe, San Ignacio or patron saint of Creel, Christo Rey. Other tours are especially suitable for birders, hikers, botanists, historians, and general naturalists. There is a well-known curendero in Sisoguishi for example, who uses traditional herbs and floras in his healing. Batopilas, as another example, offers more than 200 species of birds (doubtful that they'll all show up at one time!) For photo-journalists or other writers, we will suggest the most opportune season or time to visit certain areas and their peoples. The ores and minerals and rock strata that are visible on the ascent to Maguarichi are spectacular. Often, a trip is more valuable to a pre-arranged group of those of you sharing a common interest. Through sponsorship, participation, membership, or advocacy, we strive to stay informed of those efforts and interests of the World Wildlife Fund's Global 200 projects in Copper Canyon; National Audubon Society research; Mexican Council on Tourism; Chihuahua Tourism Group; International Missionaries Council; and the Tarahumara relief project of Wilderness Expeditions.

We also share our knowledge or experience in culturally sensitive issues, ecological concerns, historical/ political perspectives, and personal vignettes describing our own or reported encounters with the people of the region.
Happy Trails!
Norberto and Susan
